Canopy Fit-Out Ideas on a Budget

A canopy turns a tub into a lockable, dry box. What you put inside decides whether it works as a touring rig or just becomes a mess with a lid. This guide covers layouts that work, what to build yourself and what to buy, and the weight trap that catches a lot of canopy builds.

Start with zones, not products

Split the canopy into zones before you buy anything:

Caught Coasting's full DIY tub canopy writeup follows the same order: canopy and liner, then water and battery, the 12V system, drawers/wings/fridge, then storage and roof (caughtcoasting.com.au). Their advice is to keep heavy items forward of the rear axle.

Three budget layouts

1. Weekender (cheapest). A single drawer down one side, a fridge on a bought slide on the other, and soft bags on top. No false floor needed if the drawer and slide bolt straight to the tub.

2. Twin drawers + wings. A full-width two-drawer unit, wing shelves over the arches, and the fridge on top of the drawers or on a slide in one drawer bay. This is the classic touring layout. Get the dimensions for your ute from its vehicle page and the planner.

3. Drawers + bulkhead cabinet. Shorter drawers with a cabinet against the cab for water, compressor or battery. One Hilux canopy build used about 500mm for the cabinets and about 1000mm for the drawers (NewHilux.net).

Build vs buy, by item

Item DIY? Notes and prices
Drawers Yes DIY one-drawer kit about NZ$224 / A$179 (ply + Goliath runner pair + screws). Bought single drawer NZ$449–699 / A$359–449 (RigBlueprint retail_prices.json, 16 Oct 2026). See DIY ute drawers on a budget.
Fridge slide Buy, usually Kings medium (up to 60L, 100kg) is A$139 / NZ$189 (retail_prices.json). Building one that locks reliably costs about the same.
False floor Yes Ply on pine spacers (4WDing Australia).
Wing shelves Yes 12mm ply offcuts.
Water Buy the tank See water storage.
Power Buy the core parts See portable power. Fuse and wire to spec, or use an auto electrician.
Lighting Buy See camp lighting.
Latches & handles Buy cheap See drawer hardware.

The weight trap

Utes "always end up heavy", as 4WDing Australia puts it (canopy false floor). Add up the fit-out before you build. Check your vehicle's payload on its vehicle page, then subtract passengers, fuel, the canopy itself and the fit-out. Caught Coasting publishes a full payload calculation for their build, and it's a good template (caughtcoasting.com.au).

Ways to save weight: - 12mm ply instead of 18mm wherever nobody sits or sleeps - a partial false floor only (see below) - full-extension heavy runners only where you need them

Tie it all down

Everything in the canopy has to survive heavy braking and a rollover, so bolt the drawers and fridge slide through the tub or tray. Don't rely on screws into thin sheet metal or adhesive alone. Water and batteries need proper restraint brackets too.
