Canopy False Floor: How to Build a Flat Base

Most canopies leave you with an uneven floor. There's a lip at the door seal, ribs in the tub or liner, and tie-down points that don't line up with anything. A false floor gives you a flat, strong base to bolt drawers and a fridge slide to. It's also one of the cheapest parts of a fit-out to build yourself.

Why you need one

On many canopies the floor sits roughly 30–60mm lower than the door seal (4WDing Australia). Without a raised floor, drawers can't slide out over the lip. In a tub you also have to deal with ribs and liner shapes before anything sits flat.

Do you need a full floor?

Often you don't. 4WDing Australia only floored the half of their canopy that holds the drawers and fridge. That kept the lip on the other side, which stops loose gear rolling out, and saved both weight and space (4WDing Australia).

Build a floor under: - drawers and fridge slides (always) - anything that has to slide out past the door seal

Skip it under: - bulkhead water tanks and cabinets that already sit flat - open areas for soft bags

Materials

Step by step

  1. Measure the seal height above the floor and the tub floor length, and mark where the tie-downs are. Use the measuring guide and check your vehicle page for the published tub length. For example, vehicles.json lists 1520mm for an N70 Hilux and 1569mm for an N80 (Toyota UK brochure; australiancar.reviews).
  2. Make a template from cardboard to follow the arch and liner shapes, then trace it onto the ply.
  3. Cut the deck and test-fit it. Cut it in two halves if it won't fit through the canopy door.
  4. Fix the spacers under the deck, running front to back so water can drain.
  5. Drill through the deck, spacers and tub at the fixing points. Seal each hole in the tub, then bolt down with spreader washers underneath.
  6. Use the void. A 40–70mm gap under the deck is good storage for flat, light items such as spare belts, hoses and rags. Add a cut-out lid for access (4WDing Australia).
  7. Finish with carpet or oil, then bolt the drawers and slide to the deck through to the tub, not just into the ply.

Make it removable

Bolt the floor down rather than gluing it, so you can lift it out to dry the tub, sell the ute, or rebuild the layout. 4WDing Australia recommends making the whole floor removable in case "things really go bad" (source).

Weight

Every square metre of 12mm ply adds weight, so only floor what you need (see above). If you're tight on payload, see the weight section in canopy fit-out ideas.
